The Albany Bulb and Urban Sanctuary
Photo Slideshow 2: The Sculptures A stunning art screensaver can be found at Kindnessware--scroll down. History and Description (the following is partially exerpted from the website of Albany, Let It Be.) The Albany waterfront is located on the eastern edge of San Francisco Bay
and encompasses approximately 160 Most of the Albany waterfront - including the areas known as the plateau, the neck, and the bulb - was artificially created over a 30-year period, beginning in the 1950s, by filling in marshes and tidelands, primarily with construction debris. The City of Albany owns the 31-acre bulb, currently under lease to the State of California, and approximately 7 acres of right-of-way connecting Buchanan Street to the bulb. Around 1999 the City of Albany forced out a homeless encampment that had been there 10 years. After the homeless were evicted, artists and dog walkers descended on the park, making it what it is today. Above, I refer to the park as an urban sanctuary, by this I am referring to the fact that the site is unnatural in its surroundings and post industrial in its make-up. A much needed get away spot along the otherwise overbuilt San Francisco Bay Shoreline.
Contact Albany Waterfront, Let It Be! They are working to protect the park for its present uses. Namely, public art and off-leash dog park.
